The Importance of Physical Activity - part 2

Continuing the previous article, this time we will describe the benefits of physical activity.

Physical activity includes all bodily movement, exerted by the muscles, which requires energy expenditure. Our body was designed to move and requires, therefore, that we perform regular exercise to stay functional and keep us from getting sick.

Some specific benefits of physical activity are:

  • Improves heart health and keeps out cardiovascular disease.

  • Prevents and reduces high blood pressure.

  • Reduce triglycerides and increase HDL ("good" cholesterol)

  • Improves glycemia  regulation and lowers the risk of non-insulin-dependent diabetes.

  • Improves digestion and bowel regularity.

  • Decreases the risk of certain cancers, including colon, one of the most common.

  • Helps maintain weight and improves muscle strength and endurance.

  • It benefits people with arthritis because it helps maintain the structure and function of joints.

  • Contributes to reconcile and improve sleep.

  • It releases tension and reduces stress.

  • Fights the symptoms of anxiety and depression, and increases enthusiasm and optimism.

  • In older adults, reduces the risk of falls, delay or prevent chronic diseases and those associated with aging.

  • Helps to control the symptoms and prognosis of many chronic diseases (ischemic heart disease, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, etc.)

  • Minimizes mortality in young adults and the elderly, even if the activity level is moderate.
